LOCATION

The city of Essen is located in the centre of the Ruhr area and the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region. In North Rhine-Westphalia, Essen is the fourth largest city in the state after Cologne, Düsseldorf and Dortmund and also one of its major centres. The city is home to over 590,000 inhabitants. The well-developed infrastructure enables residents and visitors to use rail, road and air transport. The A2, A40, A42, A44 and A52 motorways can be reached quickly from the city centre. Essen has an ICE long-distance train station and a regional train station with direct connections to major German and European cities such as Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Paris. Essen also has four regional railway stations and 21 S-Bahn stations. Düsseldorf Airport, 30 km south of the city centre, can be reached via the A52 motorway. The S-Bahn line S1 and the regional express lines RE1, RE2, RE6, RE11 connect Düsseldorf Airport with Essen city centre. Düsseldorf Airport is considered the third largest airport in Germany in terms of passenger volume and is also the most important international hub in NRW.
